Gas Safety

Introduction:

Every local authority or registered social landlord that manages dwellings and properties (domestic and non-commercial) within the social housing or private sector has a duty and obligation to manage the risk that badly maintained gas installations or appliances installed in their properties can pose to residents, staff and members of the general public. This regulated RQF qualification is for delegates working within the Social Housing sector that provide frontline support and need to be aware of gas safety matters affecting their residents.

Current legislation states that landlords are responsible for the safety of their resident. Poorly maintained, faulty or badly installed gas appliances can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning, which can be potentially fatal. Even low-level CO poisoning, which is difficult to detect, can cause significant harm; particularly to children, pregnant women and older people.

Pre Requisites

There are no pre-requisites to this qualification.

Syllabus & Outcomes

The course consists of theory & knowledge training with an evaluation of the learning inputs by means of a written question paper. The evaluation will be ‘open book’ where delegates will be able to use reference materials to help source the answer to written questions.

• Know the types of gas used in domestic dwellings and the requirements for correct combustion
• Understand the effects that Carbon Monoxide can have on the human body
• Know how Carbon Monoxide detectors should be used to reduce the risk of Carbon Monoxide poisoning
• Know how to identify the signs of an appliance which has combustion/flue/ventilation problems
• Understand the requirements for landlords under the Gas Safety Regulations
• Understand the requirements placed upon gas installers to work legally in domestic properties
• Understand the actions necessary in the event of an escape of gas or report of fumes

The training and assessment is run over 1 day

Venue

This is delivered at our training centre in Lordswood, Kent.

Qualification details:

The course consists of 2 qualification units

• Auditing Practices and Procedures
• Technical and Safety Considerations

Pre- Requisites:

Candidates must hold a current and valid certification of gas safety competence for the range and type of gas appliances and installations to be audited.

Syllabus & Outcomes:

The Level 3 award in Auditing of Gas Work course teaches candidates the following key skills:

• How to Plan for and conduct an audit
• How to Identify incorrect, incomplete and unsafe work
• Understand current legislation and standards
• Understanding the purpose and function of an audit report and how to compile it.

The course also covers all the requirements for maintaining audit records and information as well as how to apply audit interview techniques.

There is an element of home learning required as part of this course.

Reference Materials:

An auditing guidance workbook will be provided with the course upon booking confirmation.

Candidates should have the relevant gas training manuals – not provided with the course.

Please Note – a laptop will be required for all aspects of this course, assessments will be submitted by email (first assessment to be completed and submitted on introduction day).

Duration:

2-3 days at Gas Train Ltd, broken down to 1-day Introduction and 1-2 days final inhouse assessment and course debrief.

Qualification Details

• Level 4 QCF Certificate in Gas Safety Management in Social Housing

Pre Requisites

There are no pre-requisites to this qualification. However, it is beneficial for the candidate to have completed the 1 day Level 2 Gas Awareness in Social Housing Course.

The target groups for the Qualification are those learners who are responsible for and manage services that affect and can be affected by matters of gas safety and who are;

• Updating and continuing their professional development (CPD).
• Developing knowledge and understanding relevant to a particular specialisation within an occupation or set of occupations.
• Developing their knowledge and understanding in order to gain recognition at a higher level or any different role

The qualification will also provide under pinning knowledge for QCF Level 4 Certificate in Gas Safety in Facilities Management.

The learners will know and or understand;

• Combustion and carbon monoxide
• The flueing and ventilation of gas appliances,
• The design, types, operation and installation requirements of gas appliance, meters and pipework,
• The management responsibilities in managing gas safety in social housing
• The legislative requirements affecting the management of gas safety in social housing environments.

Assessment and Examination

Short response written questions will be set by the awarding organisation and administered and marked locally at the approved centre by approved markers. Learners will be able to answer short response questions using reference to appropriate industry normative or informative sources.
